“A derelict industrial block in Fremantle will be transformed into Western Australia’s first carbon-neutral apartment building after getting the green light from a development assessment panel.

“The innovative project, on the corner of Montreal and Knutsford streets, will be entirely powered by sustainable energy and its annual carbon emissions will be about 240 tonnes fewer than a regular apartment block’s yearly output.

“OP Property’s Montreal Commons is the first apartment building approved within Development WA’s East Village at Knutsford, where more than 30 sustainable homes are under construction.

“The redevelopment area is the location of the first Nightingale Housing model in Perth, in which owner-occupiers can co-design spaces that place sustainability and liveability front and centre.

“The Hillam Architects-designed, five-storey block will feature 39 apartments, a basement carpark, landscaped courtyard, public gardens, play space, and cafe on the ground floor.”
