Students step through time at Broadway
Congratulations to our Project Lead Nisha Babu, who recently got some great feedback for her coordination of a site visit to Broadway on the Bay for the University of Western Australia, the School of Design, staff and students of the ARCT4430 Architectural Technology, Structures & Services unit.
“We would like to thank Hillam Architects for arranging, coordinating, and guiding the recent site visit to the Broadway on the Bay Crawley project,” said Simon Bodycoat, School of Design Lecturer and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects (FRAIA).
Since the recent topping out ceremony at Broadway on the Bay, staged construction has been proceeding throughout the building, as Babu explained.
“We walked the UWA students from Level 7 going down noting that each level is about two weeks apart with regard to stage of construction,” she said.
“Level 7 had just the structural elements completed – concrete core, AFS structural walls and roof structure, plantroom slab etcetera, while in Level 6 wall framing has commenced along with the first round of essential services installation. Level 5 had internal walls fully framed and most services completed.
“As we moved down through the building, lower levels apartments had all internal walls lined and finished, tiles and windows installed and so forth.”
Bodycoat said the walkthrough provided an experience that was substantially better than what could be covered in a lecture or seminar series.
“As a profession, architects often underestimate the benefits in facilitating student site experience opportunities and what this can contribute to their architectural education,” he said.
“This is particularly applicable to projects like Broadway on the Bay where the various stages of construction can be demonstrated.
“Again, our thanks to Hillam Architects, Edge Visionary Living, and Edge Construction for their willingness to participate in the education of our future architects.”
